Longi, Tesla, JinkoSolar, CITIC Bohai, and Yingli have all entered the market—what’s so appealing about BIPV?

The 5th Advanced Component Technologies and Encapsulation Materials Forum 2021 will be held in Hangzhou in September. Against the backdrop of achieving peak carbon emissions and carbon neutrality by 2030/2060, developing green buildings has become an urgent task. As a product of the deep integration between architecture and photovoltaics, Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) represents a key direction for advancing green building development, with its market size potentially exceeding one trillion yuan. In recent years, the rapid growth of the photovoltaic industry has laid a solid technological foundation for BIPV. The combination of a demand-side market worth trillions of yuan and supply-side technological advancements, coupled with the continuous introduction of supportive policies, will make the development of BIPV unstoppable.
 
 
 
Over the years, technological innovations have continuously driven the upgrading and evolution of BIPV products. Currently, the third-generation BIPV products are receiving the most attention. The batteries used in third-generation BIPV products include crystalline silicon batteries, thin-film batteries, and perovskite batteries, enabling greater diversity in BIPV product forms. The main forms of BIPV include rooftops, glass curtain walls, and sunshades. Among these, rooftop-type BIPV holds the largest market share, accounting for approximately 60% of total BIPV revenue, and the corresponding products are relatively mature.
 
 
 
As a product of the integration of photovoltaics and architecture, BIPV’s industrial chain naturally involves both the photovoltaic and construction sectors. Photovoltaic cell manufacturers, which have been deeply engaged in the photovoltaic industry for many years, occupy the upstream position in the BIPV industrial chain and face intense market competition. The midstream of the BIPV industrial chain is dominated by BIPV system integrators, including both photovoltaic companies and building materials enterprises. These midstream players enjoy advantages in marketing channels and thus possess a certain degree of bargaining power. The downstream of the BIPV industrial chain is primarily composed of commercial and industrial investors.
 
 
 
Faced with the vast blue ocean market of BIPV, numerous companies—both domestic and international—have already begun to make strategic moves and have successively launched their own BIPV products, each striving to capture a larger share of the market. Longi Green Energy, a leader in monocrystalline silicon cells, has designed the Longding BIPV module specifically for commercial and industrial rooftops; this module is now being used in several BIPV projects. Meanwhile, Longjin’s BIPV modules—a new flagship product from Longi—are primarily intended for use in glass curtain walls. Similarly, JinkoSolar has also introduced two BIPV products tailored for building roofs and glass curtain walls: colored steel tile modules and gradient-color curtain wall modules. The combination of white walls and dark-tiled roofs is a hallmark of traditional Chinese architecture. Drawing on this architectural feature, Baoding Jiasheng—a subsidiary of Yingli Group—has developed a range of BIPV modules, including dark-tile, green-brick, and glazed-tile designs. Tesla’s SolarRoof product is mainly geared toward residential applications; its accompanying monitoring and energy-storage systems significantly enhance the power autonomy of BIPV buildings.
 
 
 
BIPV products are constantly being innovated, and market demand is changing all the time. Therefore, BIPV presents both opportunities and challenges for the photovoltaic and construction industries. Whether companies in the industry will become stronger or face a reshuffling depends on their ability to effectively grasp market information.
